Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced today that sixth-generation citizens of Indian origin in Trinidad and Tobago will now be eligible for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards. This initiative will enable them to live and work in India without restrictions. Speaking at a community event with members of the Indian diaspora in Trinidad and Tobago, PM Modi encouraged them to reconnect with their ancestral roots and deepen their ties with India.
During his address, the Prime Minister also lauded Trinidad and Tobago for becoming the first Caribbean nation to adopt India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI). He noted that the implementation of UPI would benefit both Trinidad and Tobago and India, enhancing digital connectivity and economic cooperation.
In a significant gesture of recognition, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced that PM Modi will be conferred with ‘The Order of Trinidad and Tobago’, the country’s highest civilian honour.
As part of his two-day visit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar. He is also expected to address a Joint Session of the Parliament later in the evening. Mr. Modi arrived in Port of Spain last night on the second leg of his five-nation tour, where he was greeted with a ceremonial Guard of Honour.
