BNS Chapter XI – Coin and Currency Offences (Sections 260–274)

Chapter XI protects India’s monetary system by penalising counterfeiting and circulation of fake currency and coins.

Section 260 penalises counterfeiting Indian coins (up to 7 years). Section 262 covers possession of counterfeiting instruments. Section 264 targets delivery of counterfeit currency knowing it to be fake. Section 271 penalises making instruments to counterfeit currency notes (up to life imprisonment). Section 265 creates liability for a person who receives a coin as genuine and then passes it on after discovering it is counterfeit.
