BNS Chapter IV – Abetment, Conspiracy and Attempt (Sections 45–62)

Chapter IV makes persons who facilitate, plan, or partially execute a crime liable, even if the main offence is not completed.

Abetment

A person abets by instigating another to commit an offence, engaging in a conspiracy, or intentionally aiding in commission. Abetment is complete even if the abetted act does not actually occur.

Criminal Conspiracy (Section 61)

Two or more persons agreeing to do an illegal act commit criminal conspiracy. Mere agreement is sufficient for serious offences — no overt act is required.

Attempt (Section 62)

Whoever attempts to commit an offence and does any act toward commission is punishable. The attempt to commit offences punishable with life imprisonment or 10+ years carries up to half the maximum punishment.
