Section 1. Short title, extent and commencement
(1) This Act may be called the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
(2) It extends to the whole of India.
(3) It shall come into force on such date as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint.
Note: The words “except the State of Jammu and Kashmir” in sub-section (2) were omitted by the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 (34 of 2019), section 95 and the Fifth Schedule, with effect from 31 October 2019. The Act was brought into force with effect from 26 October 2006, vide Notification No. S.O. 1776(E), dated 17 October 2006.
