Section 36. Designated Officer
The Commissioner of Food Safety shall appoint a Designated Officer, not below the rank of Sub-Divisional Officer, for each district to be in charge of food safety administration in the specified area.
The Designated Officer’s functions include issuing or cancelling licences of food business operators; prohibiting the sale of non-compliant food; receiving reports and samples from Food Safety Officers and getting them analysed; recommending prosecution to the Commissioner for offences punishable with imprisonment; sanctioning or launching prosecutions for offences punishable with fine only; maintaining inspection records; investigating written complaints concerning contraventions or against a Food Safety Officer; and performing such other duties as the Commissioner may entrust.
