Section 16. Registration
Once an application is accepted and either goes unopposed past the opposition period, or an opposition is decided in the applicant’s favour, the Registrar registers the geographical indication (and any authorised users named in the application), unless the Central Government directs otherwise. Registration takes effect from the date the application was originally made, which — subject to section 84 on convention-country applicants — becomes the date of registration.
On registration, the Registrar issues certificates, sealed with the Registry’s seal, to both the registered proprietor and any registered authorised users. If registration is not completed within twelve months due to the applicant’s default, the Registrar may, after notice, treat the application as abandoned unless completed within the time specified. The Registrar may also correct clerical errors or obvious mistakes in the register or a certificate.
