Note: The Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956 (Act No. 78 of 1956) received assent on 21 December 1956. It is one of the four Hindu Code Bills — alongside the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, the Hindu Succession Act, 1956, and the Hindu Minority and Guardianship Act, 1956 — that codified and reformed Hindu personal law. The Act extends to Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and has been amended in Uttar Pradesh and, most significantly, by the Personal Laws (Amendment) Act, 1962 and the Personal Laws (Amendment) Act, 2010.
