SCHEDULE IV

Schedule IV consists of the Appendices I, II and III to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), listing thousands of species of fauna and flora subject to varying degrees of international trade control, together with the following Interpretation notes governing how the Appendices are to be read.

Interpretation

1. Species included in these Appendices are referred to: (a) by the name of the species; or (b) as being all of the species included in a higher taxon or designated part thereof.
2. The abbreviation “spp.” is used to denote all species of a higher taxon.
3. Other references to taxa higher than species are for the purposes of information or classification only. The common names included after the scientific names of families are for reference only, to indicate the species within the family concerned that are included in the Appendices; in most cases this is not all of the species within the family.
4. The following abbreviations are used for plant taxa below the level of species: (a) “ssp.” is used to denote subspecies; and (b) “var(s).” is used to denote variety (varieties).
5. As none of the species or higher taxa of FLORA included in Appendix I is annotated to the effect that its hybrids shall be treated in accordance with the provisions of Article III of the Convention, this means that artificially propagated hybrids produced from one or more of these species or taxa may be traded with a certificate of artificial propagation, and that seeds, pollen (including pollinia), cut flowers, seedling or tissue cultures obtained in vitro, in solid or liquid media, transported in sterile containers of plants included in Appendix I, are not subject to the provisions of the Convention.
6. Country names in parentheses placed against the name of a species indicate the countries for which that species is included in an Appendix and for which the species is not, or is deemed not, to be indigenous.
7. The terms and expressions used in annotations in the Appendices, such as “extract”, “finished musical instruments”, “finished musical instrument accessories”, “finished pieces”, “transformed wood” and “woodchips”, are defined in guidance issued under the Convention with reference to the Harmonized System of the World Customs Organization, and are applied consistently with that guidance.

Note: Appendices I, II and III themselves list several thousand species and higher taxa of fauna and flora, and are periodically amended by the Conference of the Parties to CITES and by individual Party listings under Article XVI. Given their length and the frequency with which they are revised, they are not reproduced verbatim on this page. The current, authoritative text of the Appendices is maintained by the CITES Secretariat and by India’s Management Authority under section 49E of this Act. Practitioners should consult the current CITES Appendices for the up-to-date species list.
