Section 17. State Bar Councils to maintain roll of advocates
(1) Every State Bar Council shall prepare and maintain a roll of advocates, entering the names and addresses of: (a) persons who were advocates on a High Court roll under the Indian Bar Councils Act, 1926 immediately before the appointed day (including certain pre-Independence enrollees) who express an intention to practise within the Council’s jurisdiction; and (b) all other persons admitted as advocates on the State roll on or after the appointed day.
(2) Each roll has two parts: Part I for senior advocates, Part II for other advocates.
(3) Entries in each part are in order of seniority, determined as follows: (a) for advocates carried over from the 1926 Act, by date of enrolment under that Act; (b) for former Supreme Court senior advocates, per principles specified by the Bar Council of India; (d) for others enrolled/designated on or after the appointed day, by date of such enrolment/designation; (e) for an attorney enrolled as an advocate, by date of enrolment as attorney.
(4) No person may be enrolled as an advocate on the roll of more than one State Bar Council.
