The Advocates Act, 1961 – Table of Contents

The Advocates Act, 1961 (Act No. 25 of 1961) is the principal legislation governing legal practitioners in India. It provides for the constitution of State Bar Councils and the Bar Council of India, admission and enrolment of advocates, the right to practise, professional conduct and discipline, and related transitional matters. It repealed the earlier Indian Bar Councils Act, 1926.

Note: The Advocates Act, 1961 (Act No. 25 of 1961) received assent on 19 May 1961 and was brought into force in stages between August 1961 and September 1963. It has been amended numerous times since — most substantially by the Advocates (Amendment) Acts of 1964, 1973, 1976, 1977 and 1993 — and repealed the earlier Indian Bar Councils Act, 1926.
