Note: The Act was substantially amended by the Transplantation of Human Organs (Amendment) Act, 2011 (Act 16 of 2011, with effect from 10 January 2014), which extended coverage from organs alone to “human organs or tissues or both”, inserted Sections 13A–13D, 14A, and 19A, and significantly enhanced penalties. It originally applied only to Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Union Territories, extending to other States by their own adoption resolution under Article 252 of the Constitution; nearly all States have since adopted it.
